Last week a gal that I carpool with and I were talking about superstitions. I was totally amazed by how superstitious she is. We discussed things like opening an umbrella in the house, walking under ladders, spilling salt, breaking mirrors and other superstitions I was familiar with, but one she mentioned I have never heard of, “pointing at a rainbow brings bad luck”. I’ve never heard this one before. Our conversation made me curious about superstitions and why people are superstitious; I decided to do a little research for some answers. There are many superstitions out there, here are a few that I found:
It’s bad luck to see an owl in the sunlight.
Rosemary planted by a doorstep will keep witches away.
If you drop a pair of scissors it means your lover is being unfaithful to you.
It’s bad luck to let milk boil over.
A yawn is a sign that danger is near. Cover your mouth when you yawn or your soul will go out of your body along with your yawn.
If 3 people are photographed together, the person in the middle will die first.
Placing a bed north and south brings misfortune.
If you catch a falling leaf on th first day of autumn you will not catch a cold all winter.
Seeing a spider run down a web in the afternoon means you will take a trip.
An acorn at the window will keep ligtening out.
If you say goodbye to a friend on a bridge you will never see them again.
Three butterflies together mean good luck.
These are just a few of the superstitions I found, believe me there are many more. These are some that I have never heard before.
I did not grow up in a home that regarded superstitions nor followed them to avoid back luck. We had our share of misfortune but never blamed it on broken mirrors or black cats. Good fortune was not sought by tossing salt over our shoulder or wishing upon a lucky star. The root of superstitions is fear; fear that bad things will happen to us or to someone we love and/or that we will miss good fortune (knock on wood) but ultimately it is the fear of death. I don’t mock anyone who is superstitious but I do wonder why they are. Are you superstitious? And how did you become superstitious? What is your main superstition?

I have to say that I knock on wood all the time. LOL. My parents did it. My grandmother came from Lithuania and was very superstitious. She passed away long before I was thought of but I've heard many things that she believed. One being, never throw a black cat in the air on a bend of the road...the devil will appear. I wanna know who does that? Makes me wonder, was she superstitious or were her children incredibly ornery? She had to make up things to scare them. LOL.
Oh, I knock on wood all the time too...nor would I open an umbrella in the house... But lots of these, I had never heard of!

Really enjoyed this post. Although all my friends have to go over the bridge to either get to or go from the cottage. I wouldn't have any left if that was true.

My Dad was very superstitious and in the later years of his life turned to phobies. I have since being born again just stay away from those thoughts....... Although I must say, I will never have witches in my house, I have a huge Rosemary plant near my door...... ahahhahah

I am not superstitious and never have been. I have been raised to know that luck and karma are things of the world. I believe that what happens to me whether good or bad is a result of a few things: consequences of choices I made, God allowing me to walk through a life experience so I can minister to others, or just God showing others what He can do. That's my two cents. =]
I really love this post.. made me think and laugh about what people think.. the only other thing I can think of... that I have seen people do is the horse shoe thing. ( hang a horse shoe up so it fills with luck our down so all your luck falls out.)
